The minimal appearance of a glass extension depends on carefully resolved supports and connections. Glasspace works with its structural engineers throughout the project, briefing them as the design develops so engineering informs decisions early.

At this stage, we bring that work together into the technical details needed to build your extension.

Applying twenty years of experience

Over the past 20 years, we have built many glass structures and developed practical knowledge of how they perform. That experience informs our approach to ambitious designs and the details needed to construct them.

Each project still requires its own engineering. The existing property, glass arrangement and supporting structure determine the requirements for your extension.

Coordinating the components

We work with our engineers to resolve the glass specification, foundations, supports and fixings. We establish how the structure connects to the house and clarify the responsibilities of Glasspace, the architect and other specialists.

The sliding doors are considered as part of this work because they integrate into the extension during assembly. Their supports and operating clearances need to be coordinated with the surrounding structure.

Allowing for movement and weather

Materials move, and building work needs tolerances. We account for these allowances in the glass joints and connections so the components can be assembled as intended.

Roof falls, drainage routes and weatherproofing are developed alongside the structural details. Where the extension meets the existing house, we consider both the appearance and the practical construction of the junction.

If a technical decision affects the design you have approved, we explain it and discuss the available options before proceeding.
