Your glass extension needs properly designed foundations, just like any other permanent structure. Even the slimmest structural glass systems rely on a stable base to keep the glazing aligned and help the extension perform safely over time.

A stable base for precise glazing

The foundations must support the weight of the glazing and provide a stable base for sliding or hinged doors. These systems work within small tolerances, so controlling movement is essential to keeping the panes aligned and the doors operating smoothly.

The design must also account for ground conditions and the effects of frost. GlasSpace has worked with building control teams across London and the Home Counties to develop foundation solutions suited to individual projects.

Protecting the existing building

New foundations must be positioned and sized carefully to avoid undermining the existing building. This is particularly important when working alongside a historic property.

We plan the groundworks to protect the building’s historic fabric, including original walls, footings and drainage systems. The excavation approach is considered as part of the wider design, rather than treated as a separate task.

Designed around your site

Where archaeological remains or other sensitive features are present, a lower-impact approach may be needed. Depending on the site and the structural design, this may involve carefully positioned pad foundations or discreet steel supports, subject to the necessary specialist advice and approvals.

Our foundations are designed to suit the conditions of your build, providing the support your glass extension needs while respecting the property around it.
